Tips For Hiring A Moving Company To Move You Out Of A Small Apartment

Posted on

If you live in a small apartment, it may initially seem silly to hire a moving company to move you out. After all, you only have a few pieces of furniture and a handful of boxes. However, many professional moving companies do provide services to small-apartment-dwellers like you. Here are some tips to help you out if you do decide that hiring one is the best choice for your situation.

1. Get an in-person quote.

Don't settle for a quote over the phone. Most moving companies will be willing to provide a quote in-person as long as you ask for it. With a small apartment, it's really important to get an in-person quote since moving companies will have a tendency to over-estimate how much stuff you have and the size of your space. When they visit in-person, they get a real sense of how small your apartment actually is, so the quotes will be more accurate and you can compare them with greater confidence.

2. Consider whether full-service moving is really necessary.

People often assume that if they hire a moving company, that means the moving company is going to do everything, from packing, to transportation, to unpacking. Surely, a moving company will do this for you if that's what you want. They call this level of service a "full-service move." With a small apartment, however, it may not be necessary to pay for this level of service. If you can pack up yourself within a couple of hours, you may want to hire movers to just load, drive, and unload the moving truck. Most offer this option, although sometimes only upon request.

3. Let your moving company know about any obstacles they might face.

If your movers do come out and give an estimate in-person, then they will be able to see and evaluate any obstacles while they are there. But if for some reason your movers don't come in-person — or if the person providing the estimate is not one of the people who ultimately helping you move — it's important to make your moving company aware of any potential trouble spots. For instance, are the doorways in your small apartment really narrow and hard to get through? Do you have a sofa that you barely got inside and are not sure will even fit through the door? If you let your movers know about these things, they can better plan ahead.

You can certainly hire a moving company to help you move out of a small apartment. Just keep the advice above in mind for success.
