4 Tips For Packing A Self-Storage Unit

Posted on

Have you just rented out a storage unit to free up some space at home? If so, you're likely wondering how to properly pack a storage unit to get the most out of the space.

Use Clear Storage Bins

While it is very affordable to use cardboard boxes for storing your belongings in a storage unit, know that they are not ideal for long-term storage. When the time comes to look for something, you'll be struggling to see what is inside each box that is stacked on top of each other. This leads to wasting a lot of time opening each box to figure out where that one thing you need is. By using clear storage bins, you can see inside the box without having to move anything. This will help you quickly narrow down what box you need to look in to find what you're looking for.

Place Large Appliances In The Back

Any large appliances that you are storing should be stored in the back of the storage unit so that they are completely out of the way. Unless you're certain that the appliance is coming out soon, it is only going to be in the way by placing it anywhere else in the unit. Plan accordingly to avoid having to move a large appliance around later.

Create An Aisle

If you have a larger storage unit, it will help to create a center aisle that allows you to get to the back of the unit. This gives you more easily accessible parts of the storage unit so that you are not limited to just the items near the front of the entrance. If possible, use a cart or shelf with wheels to create that center aisle, so that you just roll it out of the way and don't sacrifice any storage space.

Create An Inventory

Creating an inventory can be a lot of work but will help you find items when you need them. This can best be done by labeling boxes with numbers, and then having them associated with a list that tells you what is inside each box. When it comes time to find something, all you need to do is scan the list of the item you are looking for, identify which box it is, and then find it by the clear label on the side of the box. This will speed up the process of finding things in your storage unit.
